  • 50 ml Tequila 100% Agave
  • 20 ml Triple sec
  • 15 ml Freshly squeezed lime juice

Garnish: Half salt rim (Optional)

The Margarita is arguably the most famous tequila cocktail in the world. This perfect balance of tequila, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur creates a drink that’s both refreshing and sophisticated. The signature salted rim adds a savory contrast that makes each sip uniquely delicious.

Whether served on the rocks, blended, or straight up, the Margarita is a timeless classic that has inspired countless variations. From fruit-flavored margaritas to spicy jalapeño versions, this cocktail’s versatility knows no bounds.

Instructions

Official Recipe:

  1. Add ingredients: Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice.

  2. Shake and strain: Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

  3. Garnish: Half salt rim (Optional).

Tips

  • Quality tequila matters: Use 100% agave tequila for the best flavor. Blanco (silver) tequila is traditional, but reposado works beautifully too.
  • Fresh lime juice only: Never use bottled lime juice. The difference is night and day.
  • Balance sweetness: Some prefer no simple syrup, letting the natural sweetness of the triple sec shine. Adjust to your taste.
  • Salt variations: Try Tajín (chili-lime salt) for a Mexican twist, or use half salt, half sugar for a sweeter rim.
  • Frozen margaritas: Blend all ingredients with 1 cup of ice for a frozen version.

Classic Variations

  • Tommy’s Margarita: Skip the triple sec, use agave nectar instead of simple syrup
  • Strawberry Margarita: Add fresh strawberries and blend
  • Spicy Margarita: Muddle jalapeño slices before shaking
  • Cadillac Margarita: Float Grand Marnier on top for extra orange flavor

History

The exact origin of the Margarita is disputed, with several stories claiming its invention. The most popular tale credits Carlos “Danny” Herrera, who created it in 1938 at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria in Tijuana for a customer allergic to all spirits except tequila. Another story attributes it to socialite Margarita Sames, who supposedly invented it at her Acapulco vacation home in 1948.

Regardless of its true origin, the Margarita became internationally famous in the 1950s and has remained one of the world’s most beloved cocktails ever since.
