  • 20 ml Fresh lime juice
  • 6 pcs Mint sprigs
  • 2 tsp White cane sugar
  • Soda water

Garnish: Sprigs of mint and slice of lime

The Mojito is one of Cuba’s most famous cocktails, originating from Havana. This refreshing drink combines the sweetness of sugar, the tartness of lime, the coolness of fresh mint, and the kick of white rum, all topped with sparkling soda water.

Perfect for hot summer days, the Mojito has become a worldwide favorite and is a staple in bars around the globe. The key to a great Mojito is using fresh ingredients and gently muddling the mint to release its oils without making it bitter.

Instructions

Official Recipe:

  1. Mix mint with sugar and lime: Mix mint sprigs with sugar and lime juice in a highball glass.

  2. Add soda and ice: Add a splash of soda water and fill the glass with ice.

  3. Add rum: Pour the rum over the ice.

  4. Top with soda: Top with soda water and give it a light stir to involve all ingredients.

  5. Garnish: Garnish with sprigs of mint and a slice of lime.

Tips

  • Fresh ingredients matter: Always use fresh mint and freshly squeezed lime juice for the best flavor.
  • Don’t over-muddle: Gently press the mint to release oils without breaking it into small pieces, which can make the drink bitter.
  • Sugar alternatives: You can use simple syrup instead of white sugar for easier mixing.
  • Variations: Try flavored variations like strawberry mojito, mango mojito, or coconut mojito by adding fresh fruit.

History

The Mojito has roots dating back to 16th-century Cuba. It’s believed to have evolved from “El Draque,” a medicinal drink made with aguardiente (a primitive rum), lime, sugarcane juice, and mint. The modern Mojito became popular in Havana during the Prohibition era and gained international fame when Ernest Hemingway frequented La Bodeguita del Medio, one of Havana’s most famous bars.
